What is the history of the York State Fair?
A staple of York’s culture, the York State Fair dates back to 1756. In that year, Thomas Penn, the son of Pennsylvania’s founder, proclaimed that York would have a fair two times a year, taking place once in the summer and once in the fall. This version of the fair lasted until the early 1800s.
A group of powerful farmers in York County got together in 1853 to start the York County Agricultural Society. Their goal was to move the fair and make it last three days. It was built on seven acres of land that the group bought in 1856 on the east side of York, between Queen and King Streets.
During the first few months of 1861, the new fairgrounds and the old Penn Commons were used as makeshift hospitals for Union soldiers who were hurt. Later, the Secretary of War made these hospitals permanent. Because of this, the fair had to close until 1865 because the injured soldiers from Antietam took over the grounds and buildings.
In 1888, the York County Agricultural Society moved the fair to a 73-acre site because they thought the fair needed a bigger space after the Civil War. Over time, this area grew to become the York Fair/York Expo Center complex.
In 1918, 166 people in York died of the flu, which meant that the fair had to be canceled, even though it had been going on during WWI.
Over the years, the fair has added many different types of entertainment to keep up with changing customer tastes. These have included dancers, strongman competitions, horse races, and more. In 1926, a new Grandstand was built, which made the fair last five days, from Tuesday to Saturday. The fair changed its daytime hours in 1928 when it started staying open late on Wednesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays. In 1931, two new nights were added: Tuesday and Saturday. The next year, the fair also ran on Saturday nights.
