When Is Veterinary Technician Week: National Veterinary Technician Week (NVTW) has been held every year since 1993, during the third week of October. These events happen every year to honor and bring attention to the important roles that Credentialed Veterinary Technicians play in the veterinary field and society as a whole.
In honor of NVTW’s 30th anniversary, the National Association of Veterinary Technicians in America (NAVTA) has put together a list of “Pearls of Wisdom” from Accredited Veterinary Technicians who have worked in the field for more than 30 years. Since pearls are often given on the 30th wedding anniversary, these “pearls of wisdom” would make a great gift to help the next generation of certified veterinary technicians.
“National Veterinary Technician Week was one of the first times our profession got national attention. In modern veterinary medicine, teaching the public about our role and contributions is even more important. Let’s work together to bring attention to how important our profession is in veterinary medicine. This week and every day, let’s celebrate ourselves, each other, and veterinary technicians,” Linda Merri said.
History of National Veterinary Technician Week
Sheep, goats, and dogs were brought into homes and bred around 13,000 B.C. The start of taking care of animals. The original reason for this practice was to make sure there was always food during times when hunting wasn’t possible. Dogs were the first animals that people tamed and kept as pets. They watched over hunting parties, helped with hunting, and finally herded cattle.
Domestication of animals happened slowly and in waves in many countries. Nomads in the Middle East were the first people to tame sheep and goats, while people in South America focused on keeping alpacas and llamas. Later, camels were used to move through the desert, cows were needed for work, and horses were tamed to be pack animals and for meat. Most of the time, the owners, village healers, or animal doctors were in charge of taking care of and treating these animals.
During the Middle Ages, veterinary medicine started to take a more formal form. The first vets for horses were farriers. Carlo Ruini published the first book on horse anatomy in 1598, and the Worshipful Company of Farriers was founded in 1674. These were two important steps forward during the Renaissance. But in France, the first veterinary schools didn’t start until 1762. Over the years, the field changed, and by the 1950s, there were a lot of veterinary techs working.
What is National Vet Tech Week 2023?
National Veterinary Technician Week is a time to celebrate veterinary technicians every year. A non-profit group based in the U.S. called the National Association of Veterinary Technicians (NAVTA) started this curriculum in 1993. Its goal is to promote the field of veterinary nursing through professional growth, advocacy, and public awareness.
Veterinary technicians are very important to the veterinary healthcare team. They work with veterinarians to help with procedures, teach pet owners, and improve animals’ general health. The point of National Veterinary Technician Week is to show appreciation for the many skills, feelings, and love that veterinary techs bring to their jobs every day.
5 Fun Ways to Celebrate National Veterinary Technician Week
National Veterinary Technician Week is from October 15th to 21st. This is a time to recognize and respect the important work that these very skilled, caring, and often underappreciated industry heroes do.
This year, instead of the usual “surprise” lunch and free candy, you could honor your veterinary technician staff with something important, memorable, and truly unexpected, both during National Veterinary Technician Week and beyond.
1. If you want to show your respect for someone, give them a personalized tech-related gift.
A great way to show your appreciation for the important role veterinary technicians play in your practice is to give them themed gifts that spread information about their job wherever they go. On sites like Etsy, you can find unique items like funny stickers (“ADR” and “Feeling fractious”), personalized clothing, bags, drinkware, charms, and tags for stethoscopes.
It would be better to give new stethoscopes, expert tool kits, or personalized bandage scissors this time. These useful but pricey gifts show your respect for your veterinary technician and make their job easier.
2. Give your expert team a gift to show your appreciation.
Please show your appreciation and pride in your veterinary techs by recognizing their hard work, accomplishments, and skills in public.
3. As a gift, give techs more time off.
Because veterinary technicians are always busy and able to do many things at once, you should give them some time off. Even if it seems impossible or expensive for your business, giving your workers time to relax and recharge can boost morale, make the workplace a better place to be, and eventually lead to higher productivity.
4. The written gift: thank-you notes made just for each technician
People always like gift cards, but before you shut the box, add a short note to make the gift more unique. Thank-you letters that are written by hand are still a powerful and classic way to show appreciation because they show that you put thought and effort into the act.
5. The Daily Gift: To change the world, do small things every day.
You can show thanks every day by doing small things that make you feel grateful. A healthy, connected, and empowering workplace culture can be achieved through planned, ongoing efforts. Make the workplace a good place to learn, and be there for your veterinary workers when they need you to show your support. Support the training and growth of veterinary technicians by giving them chances to improve their skills, find new interests, and help the business succeed. To free up their time for other tasks, veterinarians set up in-house labs, give technicians yearly C.E. allowances, and connect them with mentors.
Why Is National Veterinary Technician Week Important
Animals have social, mental, and physical health problems just like people do. Veterinary techs are needed to help animals with a wide range of medical problems.
A veterinary technician’s job is often forgotten about and undervalued. National Veterinary Technician Week is a great time to recognize and thank veterinary technicians for all their hard work and dedication.
Still, being a veterinary assistant comes with some risks. Even in animals that seem calm, attacks can happen when they are being studied. National Veterinary Technician Week brings attention to this part of veterinary medicine that is often ignored and makes people more aware of the risks that can be present in the field.

What is the veterinary technician oath?
The Veterinary Technician’s Oath
I solemnly dedicate myself to aiding animals and society by providing excellent care and services for animals, by alleviating animal suffering, and by promoting public health.
People may call our technicians “vet techs” or “vet assistants” in our clinic, but it can be hard to understand what it means to have Registered Veterinary Technicians (RVTs) instead of “vet techs” or “vet assistants.” Our technicians get special training and are licensed to care for our veterinary patients as nurses. Others may use the words “vet tech” and “vet assistant” to refer to workers in other clinics who don’t have the right training or licenses to do their jobs properly.
To keep their licenses, our RVTs have to keep up with their continuing education and apply for them every other year. This promise makes sure that the veterinarians on the team have access to the most up-to-date information and knowledge. So, our licensed and committed professionals give your friends and working animals the best care possible.
How long are most vet tech programs?
two years
Generally, it takes about 2-3 years to complete a training program and then get credentialed. The typical associate in veterinary technology degree takes two years to complete when students go to school full time. Some schools may offer accelerated or part-time programs that alter the graduation timeline.
Veterinary assistants are very important to the running of a clinic because they help vets care for patients and do some office work. People who are interested in this job can get training on the job, as well as the chance to get certified or do an internship to improve skills related to the job.
If you look at your training choices and know all the different ways you can get ready, it might help you decide if this is the right career path for you. What a veterinary assistant does, how long training usually takes, and answers to some of the most common questions people have about this job
