Our Day in Silver Dollar City
Our tickets were bought online, and we got there around 10 a.m. We can all save money on food in the park since London has a season pass.
The women who planned this trip had a great time picking out where to go, what rides to take, and when to eat. Greg and I fell behind because we were too brave to follow the leader.
The girls were really into the fast rides, especially the roller coasters when we went to the City. It was really hot—108 degrees—and there were a lot of people waiting in line for water rides. There was a rushed one at the end of the day while the kids played Time Traveler, Thunderation, and Wildfire again.
We chose to eat small meals every few hours and drink a lot of water all day to stay cool and revived.
The Silver Dollar City app was pretty useful! It helped us find our spot on the map by showing us where the rides and shops were. It also showed how long we had to wait for each ride so we could skip the ones with long lines and focus on the ones with shorter ones. As wait times changed, we made changes to our plan to match. October 15, 1794
The first silver dollars-and the first silver half dollars-were delivered on the same day, October 15, 1794. Chief coiner Henry Voigt was responsible for 5,300 half dollars that day, and they apparently went into commerce as soon as they were released.
A big part of Branson’s history is Marble Cave, which got its name from people thinking the walls were made of marble instead of limestone. In the 1860s, geologists first found this geological treasure buried in the hills. In the 1880s, adventurers, including the publisher of a newspaper, went 200 feet down into the main chamber and praised how mysterious and beautiful it was.
Around the same time, soldiers from the Union Civil War set up a mining company to get minerals. No marble was found, even if bat guano was collected for its nitrogen content. Still, the cave became more well-known after it was written about in Scientific American in 1885, and people came from all over the continent to see it.
Because of how interesting the cave looked, Canadian mining expert William Henry Lynch bought it in 1894 and started giving tours of it with his children.
