Why is there a black bike week?
Black Bike Week was born in 1971, after a Black biker said he was told to leave the Bike Week event on Main Street on the beachside, supposedly because his Harley Davidson was dripping oil.
Atlantic Beach’s Black Bike Week began in 1980 with the help of the Flaming Knight Riders motorbike club. The event was first called the Atlantic Beach Memorial Day BikeFest. About 100 people showed up to the first protest.
The Flaming Knight Riders and the City of Atlantic Beach worked together to make the event happen so that the town could make money. However, Atlantic Beach did not officially franchise it, so the city did not make any money from it. Over time, more bikes have been seen in Myrtle Beach than in Atlantic Beach. It used to be called Flaming Knight Riders, but in 1982, it changed its name to Carolina Knight Riders.
In the 1990s, the event grew to include the whole Grand Strand, or Myrtle Beach, area. In 2002, Atlantic Beach hired a public relations company on purpose to make the beach more well-known across the country.
