In October 1901, James Wagner, who had just been named head of the Tournament of Roses Association, suggested that there be a “football match between two leading universities of the country” in the afternoon. Even better, Wagner said that the Roses Association would pay for the two teams’ entire journey and lodging.
The College Football Playoffs and The Rose Bowl Game
The Valley Hunt Club of Pasadena held a dinner to celebrate the start of the new year on January 1, 1890. Many people in the club had moved to California with their families from the Midwest and East. During the Parade, they showed off their new homes in California and talked about how nice the weather is there, even in the winter. This is what Professor Charles F. Holder said at a club meeting: “People in New York are buried in snow.” Our flowers are in full bloom, and our oranges are about to bear fruit. We should have a party and tell everyone about our paradise.
When we watch the Parade on TV, the commentators usually talk about the weather. The weather usually starts cold in the low 40s in the morning, but by the time the Rose Bowl game starts, it has warmed up a lot. Southern Californians joke that people from the East and Midwest come to visit for a few months after the Rose Bowl and then go back home as soon as the first earthquake strikes.
Remember the Rose Bowl in Pasadena
As the sun went down over Rose Bowl Stadium, I couldn’t help but think about the great time I had in Ann Arbor with my partner, Alexander Dawson, MBA ’24.
I felt right at home at Rose Bowl Stadium, even though I was over 2,000 miles from Ann Arbor. The sea of blue and yellow around me made me feel at ease. There were parties off the football field as well, even though the game and the exciting win were the main events of the day. The lively mood and unplanned get-togethers at the Ross Tailgate showed what a lively and personal community there is outside of Ann Arbor.
Two years ago, when I decided to move to Ann Arbor, I had never been there before and knew almost no one but my husband. It was scary at first. But now that I think about it, I’m sure that it was one of the best choices we’ve ever made. This feeling mostly comes from the amazing sense of community we found at Michigan Ross and the many events that have changed our lives in the past few years.
Why The Rose Bowl Isn’t Played On Sunday
Fans were thrilled when it was reported that Penn State would be playing in the Rose Bowl.
The Rose Bowl is a New Year’s Six-bowl game that usually starts on New Year’s Day. This year, however, it will start on Monday, January 2, which has made some fans very angry.
The first Rose Parade was in 1890, and the first Rose Bowl was in 1902. The Valley Hunt Club called for the Parade, which was meant to show New Yorkers how beautiful Pasadena’s winter weather and scenery are.

The first games were held at the Rose Bowl Stadium on New Year’s Day, 1916, even though it was built for the 1923 event. Even though it was the first football game played after the regular season, the Rose Bowl Game didn’t happen until 1902. After Michigan beat Stanford 49–0 in 1916, car races took over.
It’s different than they always happen on New Year’s Day, but this year, the Rose Parade and Rose Bowl will be on January 2. The “Never on a Sunday” tradition includes this change. It started in 1893 when New Year’s Day fell on a Sunday. The people who planned the Parade were worried that it might scare horses that were parked outside of churches on Sundays for services. The “Never on a Sunday” rule has stuck around even though Pasadena doesn’t have any horses anymore. This year is the 15th year that it has been broken.

The stadium and adjacent Brookside Golf and Country Club are owned by the city of Pasadena and managed by the Rose Bowl Operating Company, a non-profit organization whose board is selected by council members of the city of Pasadena. The 108th Rose Bowl Game will take place on January 1, 2022, at 1:00 PM PT and will feature a traditional matchup between the Big Ten and the Pac-12. Known as “The Granddaddy of Them All,” the Rose Bowl Game is the oldest bowl game and kicked off a myriad college football legacies in 1902.
There is a lot of interest in the Tournament of Roses comeback. The 135th Rose Parade will take place on Pasadena’s Colorado Boulevard on Monday, January 1, 2024. It was moved up because of canceled events the previous year. (The party keeps alive the “Never on a Sunday” practice that goes back to 1893.)
