History of World Space Week
The World Space Week Association (W.S.W.A.) put together the first Space Week in 1980, which was the event’s start. Space Week was held every year from July 16 to 24 to remember the historic first landing on the Moon. Later, in 1981, W.S.W.A. set up “Spaceweek National Headquarters” to plan a celebration for the whole country of the United States. As of 1999, Spaceweek had covered more than 15 countries. It was a surprise when the U.N. General Assembly declared October 4–10 to be World Space Week. The first event to honor the dead happened in 2000, and W.S.W.A. was in charge of planning it all around the world.
Right now, W.S.W.A. is in charge of a group of national coordinators from around the world who plan events in their own countries. The main goal of World Space Week for W.S.W.A. is to get people interested in space by telling them about its benefits and getting them to take part. World Space Week is now held in more than 90 countries, making it the biggest event in the world that has to do with space. The group has grown the holiday’s reach and importance over time.
The W.S.W.A. Board of Directors chooses a holiday theme every year and tells event planners how to best add to the theme. Events and promotions should be in line with the year’s theme. “Women in Space” (2021) and “Satellites Improve Life” (2020) were prior topics. Planetarium shows, government ceremonies, school activities, and art shows are some of the things that happen during World Space Week.
