Brandywine Hall hosts Roommate Appreciation Day
It was Roommate Appreciation Day (R.A.D.) at Brandywine Hall on Tuesday, September 25, from 8 to 9 p.m. The goal of having these kinds of events once a month was met with this year’s first all-hall party.
With different things to do on each floor, there was something for everyone to enjoy. On some floors, events like “Password,” in which a roommate learns a secret password from a single-word clue, were set up to help people get to know each other better. Other people were making projects, like coloring pages on the sixth floor and keychains on the first floor. This gave roommates a chance to make something special for each other. Also, everyone who comes might get free candy.
R.A. Holly Blair on the sixth floor said that the crowd for R.A.D. was amazing. She said, “It was enjoyable to witness everyone bonding with their roommates in a pleasant, relaxed environment.”
The Resident Assistants (R.A.s) at Brandywine planned this social event for about three weeks, getting the word out in a variety of ways. People in the area were told about the event through emails, personal alerts, and door-hanging invites. Huge posters in the shape of folded invitations were put on every level to make sure that all residents knew about it and were invited to take part.
Celebrating National Roommate Appreciation Day
Over the years, my friends may understand this better than anyone else. As a way to celebrate my first roommate Nell’s major choice, we had cookie cake and sparkling cider. This year, we also planned a “Do-Over de Mayo” because we were both out of town for Cinco de Mayo. Today is National Roommate Appreciation Day, which is great because O-Cedar, the leader in floor care, made it official.
I’ve been interested in having friends since I was a kid and went to summer camps where they were called “cabin mates.” That interest carried over to my first year at Furman. Some of my best friends used to live with me and are now my roommates. Some of these friendships grew stronger when they decided to live together, while others grew stronger when they became roommates. This month, O-Cedar® is focusing on showing appreciation for roommates because June 6 is National Roommate Appreciation Day. They have started the Ultimate Roommate Appreciation Sweepstakes and made their Roommate Agreement easier to use.
Chinese Roommate Appreciation Day
To thank their great roommates, T.B.C. students planned a special event on November 16, 2017, which they called Chinese Roommate Appreciation Day. Students at T.B.C. have the chance to room with Chinese students from China every term. These students make them feel welcome and help them get used to life in China. Chinese Roommate Appreciation Day is a time for T.B.C. students to recognize how hard their Chinese housemates work and how much they contribute to making their experience at T.B.C. special.
To make sure the event went well, a dedicated committee was made, and they have been working hard for the last few weeks to get ready for this big day. At their meeting on Monday, October 30th, committee members talked about a lot of different ways to show thanks in a short amount of time. The talk was the start of making plans for a truly memorable and satisfying day for everyone, including the Chinese housemates and the T.B.C. students and teachers. I’m really tired and irritated because of midterm season, and I really value my sleep. Around 4 a.m. last Wednesday, I woke up quickly and thought the room was on fire. Instead of causing chaos, my roommate muttered something angry to himself, looked at his phone, moved things around on his desk, looked at his phone again, and finally harrumphed himself back to sleep.
He quickly fell back asleep, but I woke up with a racing heart and was not at all grateful.
