About National Nursing Week

In 1953, President Eisenhower made National Nurses Week official after Dorothy Sutherland, who worked for the US Department of Health, Education, and Welfare, asked him to do so. The goal was to have a special “Nurse Day” in October of that year. The first National Nurse Week was from October 11 to 16, 1954.
In 1955, Congress turned down a bill to make National Nurse Week permanent. But in January 1974, there was a major step forward. In honor of Florence Nightingale’s birthday, May 12 was named International Nurse Day by the International Council of Nurses. The American Nurses Association (ANA) built on this by making nurse appreciation a whole week in 1990 instead of just one day. The week of May 6–12 was officially named “National Nurses Week,” and since then, it has been celebrated every year.

In 1981, there was an attempt to kill President Ronald Reagan. A group of nurses worked hard to help, and they were able to remove a bullet that was dangerously close to his heart. Reagan directly contacted the nurses after he got better to thank them and offer support.
On May 6, 1982, Ronald Reagan signed an order making that day National Recognition Day for Nurses. A few years later, on May 12, 1990, the American Nurses Association Board of Directors made the event last for a whole week. International Nurses Day has been held on this day since 1965.

It is more common for nurses to have worry, depression, and other mental health problems than people in many other jobs. They also spend a lot of time on their feet. It’s important to understand the effects of this hard job and help them stay healthy. You could plan relaxing activities like spa days with gift cards, start meditation or yoga classes run by professionals to help people relax, or offer counseling services.

For example, give the “Nurse of the Year” award every year to a team member who always goes the extra mile. Instead, you could congratulate team members on important events like their one-, three-, and five-year marks.
