Is musubi Japanese or Hawaiian?
Musubi is a wildly popular food that is commonly enjoyed in Hawaii. Resembling the Japanese culinary favorite known as onigiri, musubi is made with a base of packed white rice topped with the meat or fish of your choice, wrapped around the midsection with a piece of seaweed.
The military sent troops to Hawaii after the bombing of Pearl Harbor, which is where this one-of-a-kind Hawaiian meal got its start. Soldiers like to eat SPAM because it has a lot of calories and can be stored for a long time. Instead of being eaten in its original form, SPAM is now often served on rice that has been cooked into an onigiri shape. It became more common for people to get SPAM, which made Musubi more famous. The origin of the Spam musubi is murky, but some have suggested it was created by Barbara Funamura, a Japanese-American woman from Kauai, or during the Japanese internment camps during World War II.

Beginning in 2021, August 8 will be known as Spam Musubi Day. This holiday was created by L&L Hawaiian Barbecue, a chain of restaurants on the island of Oahu, during COVID-19. L&L’s marketing director, Brandon Dela Cruz, said, “The idea was to honor the iconic item because it’s so unique to Hawaii.”
What does musubi stand for?
musubi, in the Shintō religion of Japan, the power of becoming or creation. A number of deities are associated with musubi.
Musubi is a traditional Hawaiian street food, but I was hesitant to try it because it contains Spam, the famous strange meat that lasts for a very long time. Chefs might be interested in Spam, but those of us who want to eat more naturally might have a harder time. I think the main ingredient is “pork with ham,” which seems like an odd mix but backs up my doubts about this “viande” en conserve. A new friend of mine, James Book, runs Tastee Tiki, a fresh Hawaiian food cart in the parking lot of Newport’s Ossie Surf Shop. It serves delicious rizières and traditional Hawaiian food like Musubi.
I’m giving Musubi a chance because I love and care about her, and not for any other reason. Surprisingly, I’m already interested in a few parts of this small nibble.
Can kids eat Spam musubi?
It certainly can’t compare to boneless, skinless chicken breasts. However, if your kids eat hot dogs and other processed meat products, I would think that an occasional Spam musubi would be acceptable.
Living in Hawaii and never having eaten Spam would be weird. Each year, people in Hawaii eat an amazing 7 million cans of Spam, making them the state with the most Spam eaters per person. Arnold T. Hiura, who is in charge of the Hawaii Japanese Center in Hilo, talks about the value of Spam by pointing out how important it was as a main food for farm families. Sometimes, it was hard to get fresh meat, and cooling wasn’t available, so people turned to cheap, long-lasting foods like Spam. Families used Spam carefully because they knew they needed to add to what they already had. When diced and stir-fried with local veggies, Spam became a main part of meals.
Hiura says that the spicy sauce was meant to taste salty on purpose. He said that you will eat more rice if the food is salty. This made families turn to rice, which they sometimes bought in 100-pound bags, as a cheap way to feed eight or ten people.
There are different stories about where Spam musubi came from, but the basic idea is still the same: a slice of Spam (fried or cooked in teriyaki sauce), some rice, and nori wrap it all up. There are many kinds, and some of them have furikake added to them to make them taste better.
