THE HISTORY OF THE NEW RIVER GORGE BRIDGE
The Fayette Station Road, which used to be called the Gentry Road, opened in 1909. Tourists often call the Tunney Hunsaker Bridge “the little bridge.” It was the first road that went through the New River Gorge. It was put under the bigger arch bridge. At the time, it was seen as a miracle of engineering.
In the 1960s, Corridor L, which most people call Route 19, was built to cross the New River Gorge. The important question came up: how can this be done? Building what was then known as the world’s biggest arch bridge was the answer. In 1977, three years after it began, the building was finished. It started in 1974. In October of that year, it became known.
The bridge is an amazing building with huge dimensions: it’s 3030 feet long, 876 feet high, and 70 feet wide. Made possible with 88 million pounds of U.S., It was officially dedicated and opened on October 22, 1977. American cement and Cor-Ten steel made this amazing project possible. A Bridge Day is when there is a day between a national holiday and the weekend. So for clarity, the holiday falls on Tuesday or Thursday. This then makes Monday or Friday a Bridge Day as it ‘bridges’ the time between holiday and weekend, extending it.
On Bridge Day, people celebrate the sport of BASE jumping and also try to make the community more accepting. However, there are some places where jumping is not allowed. A BASE jumper gets a desired BASE number when they finish a jump from each of the four categories. This number shows how well they are doing in the sport.
Phil Smith and Phil Mayfield started the project and were given the names BASE #1 and #2. As more people got their BASE numbers, a new title was created for those who did midnight jumps. Therefore, Night BASE #1 was formed, first by Phil Mayfield and then by Phil Smith, to honor their long-term contributions to the sport.
There have been previous parachute attempts, with Faust Vrancic’s being the most famous. However, these were mostly one-offs. It wasn’t until 1978 that parachuting became famous as a fun adventure. Because of this, it has gotten a lot of attention and has been used in action movies and other movies. Popular culture has made the sport more common by showing its glamor and thrill on the big screen as it has grown from a solitary activity to a popular hobby.

A lot of people in the United States can easily get to the New River Gorge Bridge in West Virginia because it is close to important interstates. Over two-thirds of the people in the country can get there in one day because it is so easily accessible.
But on the third Saturday of October, commercial trucks needed to take a different route off of Rt. 19. When this change went into force at 5:30 a.m., it only affected I-79 and I-64/77 that day. Strangely, the bridge closes at 7 a.m. on the same October Saturday.
Right now, people in the area can still use Rt. 19 from Ames Heights Road in the north to Rt. 16 on the south side of the New River Gorge Bridge. Jesse, who is 68 years old, goes to the Gorge, which has a past that goes back 200 years in his family. His dad gave this land to the government to turn into a state park about fifty years ago. Jesse is happy to be back in this emotional place, even though their old “homestead” is now just a burned-out house with a chimney that is only partly intact. I can’t help but think of old TV crime tales as he runs through the Gorge to get away from the police. I feel sorry for Jesse after reading Rash’s story, but I also want to know why he did what he did.
The most moving part of “Into the Gorge” is when Jesse talks about his great-aunt from his childhood. One of the saddest memories is of his great-aunt taking care of her yard even though she couldn’t grow anything. Finally, this strong woman goes out into the Gorge and is sadly found dead, leaving a feeling of loss and hopelessness.
