A microbiologist, chemist, physicist, and two other scientists with ties to Ralph Nader’s Centre for the Study of Responsive Law started the Centre for Science in the Public Interest (CSPI) in 1971. CSPI started out focusing on clean energy and protecting the earth. After two founders left, though, the group’s focus changed to making sure food and drinks were safe.
