The many objects and archaeological finds made by Native Americans back up this historical fact. Juan Ponce de León, a Spanish adventurer, went to Florida in 1513 and wrote down what he saw. The name he gave the peninsula, “La Pascua Florida,” stuck and is now the name of the state. People chose the name “Pascua Florida,” which means “Festival of Flowers” in Spanish because the area has a lot of beautiful scenery.
Florida stands out because it was the first state in the US where people from Europe lived. Around the 1600s, the area was inhabited by French and Spanish people. Another thing is that Spanish people ruled Florida from the 1500s to the 1800s. The 1800s saw the coming together of a number of different groups in Florida. Native American people, runaways, and enslaved Africans all found safety in the state. The Black Seminoles were a Native American group that came from the South and joined forces with enslaved people who were trying to escape. Native Americans called the Seminoles came to or settled in the state.
During the 18th century, Great Britain was in charge of Florida. After it became independent, the United States took over in 1821. Fla. became the 27th state to join the union in 1845. Every year, we celebrate this important day by thinking about its history and the huge problems it overcame.

Sometime between April 2 and April 8, Ponce de León waded ashore on the northeast coast of Florida, possibly near present-day St. Augustine. He called the area la Florida, in honor of Pascua florida (“feast of the flowers”), Spain’s Eastertime celebration.
Before Europeans came, people who were Native American lived in what is now Florida. Even though other European explorers may have seen the Florida region before Ponce de León, he is thought to have been the first to actually land on the coast of Florida and start exploring it. His goal was to find the legendary “Fountain of Youth,” which is said to keep people young forever. Even though Ponce de León thought the peninsula was an island at first, he named it “La Florida” because he found it during Pascua, Florida, the Easter feast.
He went back to Florida in 1521 with the goal of starting a Spanish settlement. Unfortunately, his team had to leave for Cuba because they were attacked by hostile Native Americans not long after they got there. Because of a serious wound, he got in the war, Ponce de León died. Starting in 1565 at St. Augustine, the Spanish were able to settle on the peninsula safely. When the Florida Purchase Treaty was signed between Spain and the United States in 1819, the land became American property.

After leaving for Florida with two ships, two hundred men, fifty horses, and a variety of household pets and farming goods, Ponce de León came across a fierce attack by Native Americans on the west coast. When he got hit by an arrow, he had to go back to Cuba right away. That’s where he died from his injuries.
