Thankfully, literacy rates around the world have gone up. For example, the literacy rate for 15–24-year-olds rose from 87,286 in 2010 to 90,537 in 2019. Literacy rates among adults are rising all over the world.
Even with these improvements, there are still big gaps in reading around the world. In 2016, only 22% of young women in Chad could read and write. As late as 2018, rates were below 50% in many Sub-Saharan African countries, such as Niger, Mali, and the Central African Republic. The goal of World Read Aloud Day is to close these gaps and make reading easier for everyone.

As the name says, the truest way to celebrate World Read Aloud Day is to read a book out loud. Being alone, with your kids, or with family and friends is all fine to do this one. Think about how much fun it would be to bring your book club to life by reading your favorite poems or passages excitingly. Reading out loud makes you more comfortable with public speaking, sharpens your mind, and gives you more ways to bring stories to life that fit what you read.
No matter what age kids are, teachers should think about incorporating the event into their lessons. Set it up so that students can work in groups and take turns reading out loud, or have the whole class read your best piece together.
